About Me

I was born in Bagshot in 1942, when my parents were living in College Ride, Camberley. At the age of schooling I attended Camberley County Primary and Infants School in School Lane Camberley, now replaced by the modern Town Centre, originally in 1970. From there I went to France Hill School in France Hill Drive, now the Adult Education Centre, and at 15 went on to Brooklands Technical College in Weybridge, where I took G.C.E.’s.

I had decided to make the police as a career and on leaving Brooklands found that I was unable to join as a cadet, no vacancies, so to fill in time until reaching 19 I obtained a job at the local Co-op Store in the London Road, doing a variety of different tasks.
I then joined the Surrey Constabulary, after a medical that consisted of touching my toes, and also “coughing”, but not at the same time. I was stationed at Guildford, Woking and Redhill, where I met my wife Monica, after her car broke down and I offered to help her! Upon marriage we were posted to Ash, and lived in a police house in Ash Vale. After a year we moved to our own house in Blackwater, and in 1970 I was moved to Camberley to the old High Street police station, before moving to the then new one in Portesbery Road.
Upon promotion to sergeant in 1979 I moved just down the road, to Frimley Office, where I stayed until retirement in 1991. We have two children, Rebecca and Toby, as well as three grandchildren, Morgan and Poppy, both aged 5, and Eli, who is one.
I wrote my first book in 1984 after long conversations with my late father, and also Nora Hough, who had written two books about Blackwater and Hawley. She assured me that a “young man like me could rattle one off in a winter”, well it took me three years in fact, and publishing it myself cost me more than £3,000 for 1000 copies. Selling them all within 8 weeks gave me confidence and I have reprinted it three more times since then.
With this new found success I have gone on to write 14 books altogether for other publishers as well as self publishing, mostly successful I have to say. I have made appearances on T.V., most recently in the One Show in January 2011, as well as being on local and national radio, “Down Your Way”, and Surrey and The Eagle radio stations.
